Sweetest Day was originally dreamed up by Herbert Birch Kingston, a candy company employee. He wanted to bring happiness to underprivileged people, including orphans, shut-ins, the elderly, and the ill. He began distributing candy and small gifts to them, with the help of his friends and family. It seems that having Sweetest Day gourmet treats delivered has been a tradition since the very beginning! Since that 3rd Saturday in October, 1922, the holiday has evolved to include pretty much everyone. Valentine's Day gifts are usually sent to wives and husbands, girlfriends and boyfriends. A committee of twelve Cleveland, Ohio confectioners officially launched the new holiday, hoping to increase candy sales. Celebrities of the day helped promote the new annual event, and they focused on the philanthropic nature of the holiday. Screen siren Theda Bara celebrated Sweetest Day by sending 10,000 boxes of candy to people in Cleveland Hospitals; she also gave candy to everyone who came to see her film at the local theater. Movie star Ann Pennington took a similar route, offering 2,200 boxes of Sweetest Day candy to Cleveland’s newspaper boys.
