Situated between Buffalo and Syracuse, Rochester is New York’s third most populous city following New York City and Buffalo. Its northern territory borders Lake Ontario, and much of the land contains prime agricultural grounds for growing flowers and fruit trees making it a natural choice for Rochester gift basket delivery. Back in the 1800s, two agricultural partners, George Ellwanger and Patrick Barry, took note of the land’s floral fertility and began planting seeds and developing nurseries. The men became known throughout Upstate New York for their brilliant dahlias and freshly cut flowers. Their plants, too, were longer-lasting due to their durable breeding grounds on Lake Ontario. As their flowers and plants grew gloriously, so did the two men’s reputations. Rochester soon blossomed into a beautifully fragrant city, famous for its fabulous flora. Hence, it was affectionately dubbed, the “Flower City," and its legacy continues today.
In addition to flowers, Rochester was famous for its flour manufacturing. The “Flour City,” was actually its original nickname prior to the homonym “Flower City.” In the early 1800s, Rochester was the largest flour-producing city in America, which means our Rochester birthday gift baskets full of flour-baked favorites such as chocolate covered cookies, cake pops and sweet strawberries make equally appropriate gifts. Or you could send a friend one of our moist birthday cakes, which come in fantastic flavors of red velvet, rich chocolate, tantalizing tiramisu and creamy vanilla bean. The cakes can even be personalized for extra enjoyment on someone’s special day.
Compared to the neighboring town of Albany, the flowers and plants of Rochester were available a week earlier as the men had them delivered fresh from the fields, right after they were cut! This successful business model is very similar to our very own here at Shari’s Berries, where we offer all our customers a 100% freshness guarantee.
George and Patrick’s agricultural journey did not stop with flowers and plants. They also planted local fruit trees in orchards. Sending a Rochester food gift basket instead of flowers therefore, makes just as much sense! For the fruit fans in your family, our assorted dried fruit collections feature sweetly plump peaches, pears, apricots, mangos, plums, persimmons and dates. Or mix it up and send someone a sampler platter featuring dried fruit and roasted nuts including almonds, cashews, pistachios and even trail mix to satisfy every snack craving!
It helped the town’s agricultural cause, of course, that Rochester already had many orchards thanks to both local Native American tribes and the work of Johnny Appleseed. So in the spirit of Mr. Appleseed and in the name of “keeping the doctor away,” send someone a Rochester gift basket with enough apples to keep the doctor away for a month! You cannot go wrong with any of our fruit collections that include ripe red Fuji apples or crispy green Granny Smiths! For added sweetness, indulge a loved one by shipping some hand-dipped caramel apples, freshly coated in crunchy nuts.
