'Tis the season for holiday soirees, and chances are you'll be having a gathering of your own. The holidays are a time to share with your closest family and friends, but are also a great opportunity to show off your party planning skills. Even if you're not an experienced hostess or don't really know your way around the kitchen, there are still numerous ways you can ensure that your bash is a success.

1. Go all-out with your decorations. Ensure that your guests will get into the season's spirit by decking out your halls with plenty of Christmas decor. A couple of wreaths, some evergreen, plenty of colorful ornaments and festive flowers will be the perfect additions to your home. You may also want to light a few holiday scented candles to make sure the whole place smells like Christmas.

2. Make the perfect playlist. Chances are, your friends and family will be engaged in talking and laughing amongst themselves, but a bit of background music provides a nice ambiance and will make your house really feel like a home. Put together a mix of classic Christmas songs, as well as a few new ones you think your loved ones will enjoy, then play it on a relatively low volume. It's okay if things feel a bit over-the-top or cheesy - it's a holiday party.

You won't have to worry about checking on anything in the kitchen while your guests are there.
