Planning a summer cookout? We’ve got an interesting idea for you to try out. Add some strawberries to the grill to top a dessert or make a strawberry sauce to top a burger (yes, really). Now, we know this isn’t what we would normally be talking about, and there isn’t any chocolate involved, but it is delicious. And everyone loves delicious.
To create a strawberry sauce for burgers, coat a grill-safe pan or a disposable aluminum foil pan with butter. Hull and cut strawberries into halves or quarters (1 cup per person). In a mixing bowl, toss the strawberries with 1/2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar for each cup of strawberries. Divide the strawberries in half and place in the pan. Cook over medium heat for 8 minutes, until the strawberries begin to break down. Add the remaining strawberries and cook an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
Now, I personally like to use this as a topper for a turkey burger with a little mozzarella and basil, but it can be added to a bacon burger for a nice savory sweet combination.
And on to dessert…
For this, we cook the strawberries directly on the grill. We prefer to use skewers as it makes them easier to turn and divide amongst guests. Hull the strawberries (3 -5 per person, depending on size and preference), coat them in balsamic vinegar, and roll them in granulated sugar. Grill over high heat for 1 to 2 minutes each side until grill marks appear and the fruit is warm. Remove them from heat. You can use these to top ice cream, pudding, make strawberry shortcakes, or simply add them to a little whipped cream.
We hope you enjoy these as much as we do. Good grilling!
